Moises Spilere: Brazil's first lgbtq+ football club president

Moises Spilere remembers the day of his election very good. "It was rather spontaneous and came about that way," the 35-year-old told DW.

In the past, elections at Caravaggio Futebol Clube were usually held where members turned to a community that was willing to take over the direction and run the club.

"I was ready this moment, together with others, to take on that responsibility," Spilere said.

By the close of the day, he was elected unanimously and for the last limited weeks, Moises Spilere has been the chairman of Caravaggio Futebol Clube.

As a second-division club from Nova Venza, a city of 14,000 inhabitants in the state championship of the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, the personnel affair of this relatively small team attracted an unusual amount of media attention throughout Brazil.

Solely because Moises Spilere is the first openly queer club president in the country. The national newspapers reported on his appointment, LGBTQ blogs attributed amazing importance to his election, and he is a sought-after interview partner.

GSAs Build Power

Genders & Sexualities Alliances, or GSAs for short, are student-run organizations that unite LGBTQ+ and allied youth to create community and organize around issues impacting them in their schools and communities. GSAs have evolved beyond their traditional role to serve as safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth in middle schools and lofty schools, and have emerged as vehicles for grave social change related to racial, gender, and educational justice.

A growing body of research confirms that the presence of a GSA has a positive and lasting effect on student health, wellness, and academic performance. It can also protect students from harassment based on sexual orientation or gender individuality, and improve school climates for all students in the long-term.

In March 2020, schools across the land closed down and shifted into a virtual room due to the COVID-19 global health crisis.  Many school activities and clubs were discontinued and unable to survive the travel into a digital society.
