Denzel Washington says his same-sex attracted kiss in 'Gladiator II' was cut, thinks filmmakers 'got chicken'

“Gladiator II” is set to release next week, bringing audiences the glory and gore of the Roman Empire: Swords will be unsheathed in this blockbuster sequel and heroes will rise — and perhaps share a kiss?

Actor Denzel Washington told Gayety that he had a kiss in the movie but that it was ultimately cut from the final print.

“I actually kissed the man in the film, but they took it, they slice it. I think they got chicken,” Washington, who plays a Roman businessman in the film, said in a video interview. “I kissed a guy full on the lips, and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet.”

“I killed him about five minutes later,” he added with a cackle. “It’s ‘Gladiator.’ It’s the kiss of death.”

It appears that it wasn’t the only kiss that was cut from the Ridley Scott-directed film.

Actor Paul Mescal told Entertainment Weekly about a moment with co-star Pedro Pascal: “There was a moment when we were rehearsing my battle scene with Pedro, and I had an notion towards the end of the scene to embrace Pedro on the forehead.”

“I did it in one of the takes, and then we’re getting

Five decades after it was made, Sunday Bloody Sunday is just as poignant and intelligent as it was back in 1971, when initially released. John Schlesinger’s mature tale was nominated for major Oscars and won the Golden Globe for Best English-Speaking Foreign Film (a category since discontinued), earning a Best Actor nomination for Peter Finch. Based on Penelope Gilliatt’s sharply observed screenplay, the movie holds an important place in film history, offering the first positive image of a homosexual character in a lead role in a mainstream movie.

Schlesinger, the late Jewish openly male lover filmmaker, is better-known for his Oscar-winning picture, Midnight Cowboy (1969). That movie, starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, also had homosexual subtext in the association between its two loser-protagonists. However, Sunday Bloody Sunday should be considered as Schlesinger’s finest film, a complex, remarkably modulated, emotionally successful British movie about three Londoners and the breakup of two love affairs.

I distinctly remember in my early teens sitting with my family and witnessing my first gay kissing scene on TV whilst watching Coronation Street – at the time seeing a gay kiss on TV was a enormous deal!

In an ideal society, seeing gay kisses on screen would be not be noteworthy at all, it would be a boring everyday occurrence. [no_toc]

Unfortunately, that is not the world we live in and in our lifetime alone I have seen the visibility of same-sex attracted couple on screen grow tenfold, still with mix of both celebration and pushback.

Don’t forget, movies still get banned in certain countries if they enclose a gay kiss or at a minimum will get censored – this is fundamentally wrong and is one of the many reasons why the on-screen gay kisses in our list are iconic, important and somewhat revolutionary for all the right reasons.

A huge shout out to all those directors who have taken it upon themselves to wind gay kisses and avoid any backlash they may receive. The impact they will have had on young gay people watching all around the nature is huge.
