Summertime is supposed to be peaceful for collegiate student-athletes. Serene. Not a lot of noise. Notre Dame women’s basketball guard Hannah Hidalgo invited plenty of pandemonium into her time off a year ago, though.

Last July, Hidalgo shared a video of right-wing political commentator Candace Owens calling the marriage of former CNN host Don Lemon, a gay man, a “sinful relationship.”

“Yes, you are sinning,” Owens told him. “You’re in a sinful relationship. I actually don’t believe marriage can be between two men.”

Hidalgo did not publicly handle sharing the post until she authored a Players’ Tribune piece in prior April. In the summer of 2024, Hidalgo reposted a video of conservative pundit Candace Owens discussing how same-sex marriage was a "sin," though she remained mum on the topic. Former Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw shared her thoughts, stating it was "almost insulting" to Hidalgo's teammates – and fans have been quick to heckle the star about it as well.

Almost a year after the incident, Hidalgo has spoken on the controversy and apologized for posting the video in the first place. During the second episode of ESPN's 'Full Court Press,' the star guard spoke at length about the clip and how she felt after having time to reflect on it.

There’s no denying the proficiency and ability of Notre Dame sophomore guard Hannah Hidalgo on the court. In her first collegiate season, Hidalgo was only the fifth player in the women’s college basketball history to earn First Team All-American honors, guide the nation in steals and be elevated to a place of management in the Fighting Irish program.

Then, in July of 2024, Hidalgo joint a controversial post on social media between CNN anchor Don Lemon and political commentator Candace Owens.

In the snippet of a longer conversation, Lemon, a married gay guy, asked Owen what she thinks about same sex marriage.

“It’s a sin,” said Owens.

“You think it’s a sin?” said Lemon. “So you think I’m sinful because I’m married to a man?”
