A Look at Sedona's History
Sedona was named after Sedona Arabella Miller Schenbly, who was the wife of Theodore Schenbly, the city’s first postmaster. Its first settler, John Thompson, moved to the Oak Creek Canyon area in 1876, which was at the time well-known for its apple and peach orchards. Most of the early settlers were farmers and ranchers and at the time the first post office was established, there were only 55 residents. Even by the mid-1950s, only 200 people lived in the area. Eventually, after electricity arrived in the 1960s, the area began to grow as a tourist destination and remains so to this day. Set among ancient red rock formations, scenic mountain lanes, and gorgeous river valleys, Sedona-Verde Valley’s annual Pride festival supports the entire Verde Valley region’s LGBTQ+ community. The slow September event brings together members of the LGBTQ+ family from scenic Sedona, the historic city of Jerome, and the friendly town of Cottonwood for a community friendly annual event. The annual festival brings folks from Arizona cities with their own Identity festival festivals, such as Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Tucson. Unify Sedona… a rainbow alliance is a bridge-building organization. Our intention is to produce opportunities for ALL members of the community, including LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, double attraction, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual. The plus sign (+) represents other identities that are not included in the acronym, such as agender, pansexual, demisexual, and aromantic), black, brown and indigenous groups, to gather and embrace their uniqueness, always recognizing that we are stronger together.
We host events that provide a protected forum for conversation and mutual understanding. We present valuable, thematic educational opportunities that honor these four pillars relating to the LGBTQIA+ experience: Health and Aging, Youth and Awareness, Non-discrimination, and Transgender issues.
Our events are designed to inspire others to adore more and judge less, driving local change that ripples out to regional and global impact. This directly supports our mission of promoting acceptance and celebrating diversity through knowledge and collaboration.

The retort is simple: Sedona is a friendly town to all visitors, straight or gay, so at any one the Sedona resorts, hotels or motels, you will find a passionate, relaxing and welcoming environment.
