Jodie Fosters Confounding Coming Out Speech
On The Dish blog, Andrew Sullivan wasn't having it.
For someone so concerned about her privacy, Jodie Foster picked a hell of period to take her biggest step so far in coming out publicly her rambling acceptance speech at the Golden Globes as she received the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award on January
She first teased the audience by saying, I have a sudden urge to say something that Ive never been capable to say in public and warned that it would make her publicist nervous, only to state loud and proud that I am single!
She then said she didnt require to do a massive coming out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago in the Stone Age, in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would unseal up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met, which is news to most of us.
Instead of leaving it there and saying she was now going to be more open, she said, But now Im told, apparently, that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of the
SoJodieFoster finally admitted that she's gay (though she never actually said the word) at the Golden Globes, and of course her worst nightmare -- a bazillion pieces like this one, dissecting her intimate life and proselytizing about her bizarre speech -- is coming true. Adequately, too f***ing bad, Jodie! There wouldn't be any pieces written about it now if you'd just been brave enough to come out a prolonged time ago, like the rest of us.
I mean, is it ? Jodie's defensive speech, in which she seemed to blame Honey Boo Boo and reality TV for supposedly creating a climate that forced her out of the closet, harkened back to a moment when it was a big deal to proclaim your sexual orientation. Hello, it's ! People are getting "gay married" and homos can be out in the military and stuff! But she wouldn't know that, because she's been so deeply entrenched in the closet that she's like Encino Man. (That reference is as dated as Jodie's thinking about this topic.)
Why am I so angry? Because I'm roughly the alike age as Jodie, and yet I had the courage to come out exactly 20 years ago. This was before Glee and Modern Family and Will & Grace -- and even Ellen DeGeneres' historical and culture
Tonight at the Golden Globe awards, Jodie Foster was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. After Robert Downey Jr. and his skinny line of facial hair rambled on about who knows what, Jodie popped in front of the crowd with the compassionate of energy that immediately makes everyone on Twitter accuse folks of organism under the influence. And perhaps she was — the gay influence. Because after 47 years in the industry, shes finally for realzies come out. Sure theres been the mention of a significant other in speeches here. The jumbled and confusing lust-driven defense of Kristen Stewart there. But nothing concrete.
After a long dramatic build-up, she did what everyone knew was coming. Troll the audience. Imsingle, she spit out with the same captivating energy she had from the moment she opened her mouth. Foster also thanked her ex-partner and co-parent, Cydney Bernard, as part of her own modern family. However after that she wowed America and brought the audience to tears with a plea for awareness. She tried to express that no one can truly understand what its like to be under a microscope and in the spotlight from before you even
The most essential thing Jodie did in her speech was arrive out in her control way. Her own way is the crucial remark there. There is no one right way to come out as LGBT. Ive read a handful of blogs, viewed comments and have seen many Tweets about this and Ive read points of view that applaud Jodie for coming out in a grand way. Ive also read points that tear her apart for not having done it publicly sooner.
Three things we know about Jodie are;
- She has always valued privacy above all else
- Shes been in the acting business her entire life (47 out of 50 years)
- Many of us already knew that she was a lesbian. In she thanked her then partner Cydney in an acceptance speech. T
