BERKEY & GAY Early 20th Century Mahogany Sheraton Manner Five-Drawer Chest

In , William Berkey arrived in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and founded a mill to manufacture window sashes and other wood building products. He was joined by his brother, Julius, who later began manufacturing what became known as the Berkey table. This was highly successful, and soon the Berkey brothers were concentrating on making furniture. 

The organization took on various partners over time, including George W. Gay, who bought an interest in the company in to shape Berkey Brothers & Homosexual. In , William Berkey withdrew from the organization, and Julius Berkey and George W. Gay incorporated to form the Berkey & Gay Furniture Organization. In , the recent company opened its six-story factory, complete with wholesale and retail showrooms, in Grand Rapids. By , this factory covered three city blocks. The firm is known for making Victorian furniture.

George W. Lgbtq+, although continuing to be involved with Berkey & Gay, also struck out on his own business ventures. One of these was the Oriel Cabinet Company, which he established in Oriel Cabinet man-made a factory at this site in the s, but the original truth

MPF Conservation

The Berkey and Queer collection was conserved by MPF Conservation It was part of the imaginative collection bought by Henry Hahn for the Henry Hahn House.

Berkey and Lgbtq+ (or Berkey & Gay) was founded by brothers William and Julius Berkey, and George Gay in Grand Rapids, MI, extended considered to be a center for furniture film. Cabinet maker John Frohberg is credited with many of the carving designs. The scalloped design shown on these pieces was a trademark of their company.

It is important to emphasize that MPFC was not tasked with refinishing the Berkey and Male lover pieces, but preserving the original finish. On all pieces, the finish was treated using our control in-house shellac mixed with no additives. As infill it matched the historic finish; after it was waxed and rubbed to a warm patina.

Note: The China Cabinet, right, was in the leading condition and
served as a model for how the original finish might have appeared.

I found this piece in an elderly house that i cleaned out, I have only researched it a small but have potentially set up that it was made before for this firm went out of business in the &#;s. It&#;s a nice piece has some minor flaws and has original wooden casters.

    The label is not representative for 19th century. I am not familiar with the maker.

    Suspect it is 20th century piece (near the end of the companies existence, if the label is authentic to the piece), but in the style of mid/ late 19th century.

    Also the adornment on the top (back) is not something typically found in the 19th century.

    Additional photos demonstrating drawer joints and bottom along with interior of the lock may aid to confirm dating.

The front is hand painted with a cameo between floral accents on the upper drawer. The lower cabinet door shows a painted scene with 2 birds perched within flowers. Reduce door opens to 3 graduated dovetailed drawers. The cabinet panels are neatly framed in square and rectangular trim. Upper. middle and lower sections hold a fluted band that goes horizontally across the piece. There are 4 legs with a bulbous reeded top that taper into arrow bears Berkey and Gays original Logo
