Finding good queer media is hard. Sometimes you’re looking for a good fantasy show that happens to star a lesbian direct. Other times, you’re looking for high drama featuring gay romance, or a sitcom with trans visibility. We know it’s firm to fight with streaming services’ slim LGBTQ categories, and more difficult to disseminate what exactly is LGBTQ about them from brief descriptors. It’s even more challenging to last unspoiled if you wish to know what you’re getting into before you dive in.
As such, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite LGBTQ shows currently on Netflix. Each show here features a queer character in a starring role, most with ongoing storylines throughout the series. There’s a small something for everyone, from lighthearted animation to prestige drama, and we did our best to involve a selection that represents a wide amount of the queer community. We’ve also done our leading to include why each entry made it on the list without giving away too much—some of these storylines don’t arise until well into the series, so we yearn to keep you as unspoiled as possible.
Honorable Mentions: Warrior Nun, The Legend of Korra, DCs Legends of Tomorrow, Dancing Queen
Okay, we’re starting with Sex Education, because it is my favorite show on this list (perhaps currently on TV) and if you get nothing else from this list it should be WATCHSEX EDUCATION. The British dramedy centers on Otis (Asa Butterfield, aka the boy in Hugo), a high university student who decides to make some extra cash working as a sex therapist for his fellow classmates, as his mom (played by The Crown’s ibble dibbleing Margaret Thatcher, Gillian Anderson) is an actual sex therapist. Better than a thousand YouTube tutorials or Cosmo articles, this show dives into all of the nooks and crannies of sex, displaying homosexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality, asexuality, douching, scissoring, masturbation, fellatio, crossdressing, erotica, roleplay, fetishes, vaginas with teeth, and yes, even heterosexuality (boring, I know). Otis’s friendship with his gay bestie Eric (the LUMINOUS Ncuti Gatwa who should be the lead of at least 15 shows by now) is a stunning depiction of allyship, and Eric’s relationship with Rahim (Sami Outalbali) in Season 2 is the freaking cutest. Also Maeve (Emma Mackey, soon to be
Over hour it has come to our attention that some titles are not getting caught by our scrapers. This is to be expected as Netflix form it harder and harder for us to drag information.
